The Multisensory Learning Concept for Mathematics: "Matto, the Lugworm"

Matto2neu
Matto, the lugworm, accompanies the children through the world of mathematics. The first three modules lay the foundation for the development of mathematical thinking and also contain the holistic, multisensory comprehension of quantities and shapes. Action-oriented and in a playful manner, the children acquire their first basic mathematical capabilities using all their senses. Thematically coordinated rhymes, songs, and dances accompany the learning process, thus supporting the playful character of the modules.

The following modules orientate themselves by the standards of education for mathematics in elementary school while at the same time incorporating neuropedagogical findings on learning processes, thus emphazising the holistic, multisensory and interdisciplinary aspect. Through experience and motion, with accompanying stories, lots of music, and by using all of their senses the children discover and experience the numerical scope from one to twenty while their creativity and linguistic abilities are individually challenged and furthered. At the same time they learn interesting facts about the habitat of the mudflats.

The structuring of the learning concept into modules enables the teacher to specifically aid children with learning difficulties on different stages of development in acquiring mathematical competency.

Detailed diagnostic sheets, as well as relative suggestions to possible tutoring measures can be found in the teacher’s recommendations for the individual modules. These recommendations contain detailed didactic and methodic advice concerning the learning strategies applied, as well as additional work sheets for the individual work on different levels.

The learning concept "Matto, the lugworm" follows a clear structure: First the numerical scope from 1 to 10 is extensively worked out, followed by the introduction of addition. Next, addition is practiced in the extended numerical scope from 1 to 20, and only then is subtraction introduced. The clear structure in the introduction of calculating operations is also found on the accompanying work pages of the students’ booklets.
